Experimental Study of the Temperature Parameters of a Two-layer Expansion Joint of Rigid Airfield Pavement when Subjected to Microwave Heating

Abstract

During the operation of rigid airfield and road pavements, the tightness of their expansion joints is lost in the first turn under the influence of climatic conditions and mechanical loads, causing premature degradation of pavement quality. One of promising methods for maintaining the quality of expansion joints in rigid airfield pavements is to perform periodic heat treatment of the joint sealant, during which it is heated to a liquid state by using the energy of microwave electromagnetic waves. As a result of this treatment, minor defects in the expansion joint upper layer are eliminated. The aim of the work is to experimentally study the heat treatment process of a two-layer expansion joint of a rigid airfield pavement in using microwave energy supply. A full-scale experiment was conducted on a physical model simulating a rigid airfield pavement fragment containing a two-layer expansion joint, which was heated using the developed microwave installation. The expansion joint temperature was measured by means of an NT 9815 four-channel digital industrial temperature meter. The temperature meter was equipped with sensors in the form of TR 01 open-type Chromel-Alumel rapid-response thermoelements (of type K according to the international classification), which were inserted at four points along the expansion joint height. Temperature measurements were taken in the expansion joint elements subjected to dielectric heating. Temperature variations with time at fixed points of the two-layer expansion joint were obtained, and statistical processing of the measurement results was performed. It has been determined that the flow temperature in the bitumen-based sealant material with a stationary position of the laboratory microwave unit is reached in 10 minutes. As a result of the experimental study, a monotonic change with time of temperature values in different expansion joint zones during its microwave heating has been determined. The relative random RMS measurement error does not exceed 18%. The conducted experimental study confirms the potential of the microwave method for treating rigid airfield pavement expansion joints for eliminating minor defects in the sealant.
