Abstract

The Moscow Power Engineering Institute's Department of Heat-and-Mass Transfer Processes and Installations was established in 1956 as a result of dividing the Department of Industrial Thermal Engineering into two units: the Department of Drying and Heat Transfer Installations (DHTI) and the Department of Heat Supply Systems for Industrial Enterprises (HSSIE). Nowadays, the Department of HSSIE has become the Department of Industrial Thermal Engineering Systems (ITES). In 1971, the Department of DHTI was renamed into the Department of Heat-Transfer Processes and Air Conditioning Systems (HTP & ACS), and in 1979 it was renamed into the Department of Heat-and-Mass Transfer Processes and Installations (HMTPI). The newly established Department of DHTI was headed by P.D. Lebedev, the Honored Worker of Science and Engineering, Doctor Techn. Sci., Professor and the first dean of the Faculty of Industrial Thermal Engineering, which was established in 1953. P.D. Lebedev headed the department till 1971. In different years, the Department of HMTPI was headed by V.V. Galaktionov (1971–1973), who is presently Doct. Techn. Sci. and Professor; Doct. Techn. Sci. and Professor D.A. Labuntsov (1973–1976); the Honored Worker of Science and Engineering, Doct. Techn. Sci. and Professor V.P. Motulevich (1976–1988); the Soviet Union State Prize winner, Doct. Techn. Sci. and Professor Yu.M. Pavlov (1988–2004); and the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doct. Techn. Sci. and Professor Yu.G. Nazmeev (2004–2006). Since 2006, the department is headed by Doct. Techn. Sci. and Professor A.B. Garyaev. Since the time of its foundation and till nowadays, the Department has been educating engineers in the discipline Industrial Thermal Engineering; since 1962, engineers in the discipline Air Conditioning Machines and Devices, which was later transformed into the discipline Aircraft and Rocket-and-Spacecraft Thermal Engineering. In 2001, a new discipline Power Supply of Enterprises was added. At present, the Department graduates bachelors in the disciplines Power Supply of Enterprises and Industrial Thermal Engineering, and masters in the training discipline Power Supply of Enterprises. Heat-and-Mass Transfer Processes and Installations. The Department of HMTPI also conducts research activities in the following main lines: problem-oriented investigations and development of scientific-technical solutions aimed at elaborating energy saving and environmentally friendly thermochemical technologies for recovering the heat of natural gas combustion products; elaboration and improvement of prospective process arrangements for recovering the low-grade heat of wet flue gases from process installations; studying of the heat-and-mass transfer processes in the elements of two-phase pulsation heat pumps aimed at improving their energy efficiency in heat and cold supply systems; numerical simulation of unsteady fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes during turbulent flow of incompressible and compressible fluids in channels; and elaboration of methods for enhancing heat transfer in various types of heat exchangers.
